Tread Lightly Caravan
Yesterday we went to the Tread Lightly Caravan. We took parts in lots of exciting activities, we even planted a radish seed each! The main messages were:
- Our actions and choices have an effect on our environment.
- If we continue to use resources (water, materials, energy) as we do now, we will run out.
- Small changes in the way we live will help save resources, prevent pollution and protect our plants, animals and their habitats.
ROC Day 2016
We had so much fun on ROC Day! We walked around the community picking up rubbish, took part in outdoor challenges and did Art. What a cool day!

Annabel's Favourite Part
My favourite part was the school lesson because even though the cane was scary it was still exciting. The slates and the letters were all weird especially when you are actually using one!!

More Thoughts about Howick Village
My favourite part was going to the school house. Mrs Palmer was very strict and she carried a scary cane with her. I liked using slate pencils to write on the slate boards. We did Geography and I found that a little bit tricky. I was a bit scared of Mrs Palmer because she whacked my desk with her cane.

Howick Village
We had a fantastic day at Howick Village on Friday! Here are some of our favourite parts.
My favourite part was the parlour games. I learnt that it’s a chance for new
friends to join and play games together. Also it’s a chance for kids to find love. My favourite game was the one with a ring on a piece of string, I was a bit disappointed because I did not get to have a turn to have the ring.

Rose's Cross Country Sense Poem
I can see my mum clapping and cheering, encouraging me to run faster.
I can hear the engine of cars racing faster than me.
I can feel my legs; tired, weak, but determined.
I can smell the hot sweat dripping down my cheeks.
I can taste my saliva swishing in my mouth.

Ruby's Cross Country Sense Poem
I can see Kaia speeding in front of me as I run up the steep hill. It feels like I am climbing a never ending staircase.
I can hear children puffing while they are racing towards the loud, excited crowd.
I can feel my strong legs pushing me up the towering hill on Hillcrest Ave.
I can smell sweaty kids in their hot, sticky sports uniform.
I can taste the dry air inside my tired mouth because all my saliva is gone!
By Ruby
Benjamin's Cross Country Sense Poem
I can see bright, green grass underneath my feet.
I can hear my heart beating like an elephant stamping.
I can feel my body getting tired and sore.
I can smell my sweat dribbling down my face.
I can taste the saliva drying up in my mouth.

Joseph's Cross Country Sense Poem
I can see cars zooming past me as I run up Hillcrest Ave.
I can hear kids and parents cheering for me and encouraging me to go faster.
I can feel my legs getting slower and slower.
I can smell the fresh air reminding me of nature.
I can taste the hot sweat sliding down from my head.

Nati's Brain Hook
I couldn't believe my eyes, there in front of me were five real life brains! Last Thursday Room 9 went to the Sunnybrae hall to learn new things about all sorts of brains. Neuroscientists came for a visit to tell us about humans and animal brains and how they worked. By Nati
Fiona's Brain Hook
We have been working on hooks to get people interested in reading about our experience seeing brains.
The hall was silent while Room 9 walked along the hallway. A few seconds later…I saw a real life human brain! By Fiona

Sketching
We have been learning how to draw still life with Mrs Olliver looking at size, space and shape. Look at examples of what we drew!
Tom Gates
Miss Rodger has been reading us the Tom Gates series by Liz Pichon. Today for our quickwrites we had to write about Tom Gates for four minutes. I think Tom Gates is...
I think Tom Gates is funny because one if his songs from his band Dog Zombies is 'Delia's a Weirdo'. Delia is his sister who is pretty annoying and has a dodgy boyfriend. Also I think Tom Gates is very crafty and a cool person to have such a creative imagination because he loves doodling. Tom always tries to write bad things in Marcus' book (his enemy). He is always getting in trouble with Mr Fullerman.
By Mele
I think Tom Gates is amazing because of his doodling that he does! The doodling that I like is when he draws from his imagination. Also he writes letters to his teacher but he signs them with his parent's signature. He also likes a girl called Amy Porter because she is very smart!

Sense Poems
At the Beach
I can see people playing volleyball in the hot steaming sun.
I can hear dogs barking in the sunlight as they chase balls.
I can smell dead fish on the dry, warm sand.
I can feel the cold breeze of the wind cooling my body.
I can taste the delicious ice cream spreading onto my tongue and in my body.
By Harlem
At the Sunnybrae Tryathlon
I can see people splashing in the water.
I can hear people cheering.
I can smell a lot of people sweating.
I can feel sweat running down my neck.
I can taste rainwater on my tongue.

Character Descriptions
There standing in the dimly lit room was a witch. She had...
She had a couple of old, rotten crooked teeth and her mouth was all dried up. Her eyes were like pingpong balls and had a touch of evil. The wrinkles on her face were like a prune and her nose was like a long finger hanging off her face. She had grey hair, like ragged string. Her long fingernails were as sharp as a pocket knife and her bony fingers were like a birds leg.
By Kaia
She had a nose like a fishing rod hook and you couldn't see her nostrils. She only had two teeth, one on each side of her mouth. They were horribly dirty. Her eyes were as round as soccer balls and beady so they were always watching you. Her face was so wrinkly you would burst to iron it. Her smile looked like she was about to do the most wicked laugh.
By Amy
She had a hooked nose. Her eyes looked as evil as a monster. Her fingernails were so sharp they looked as if she might be ready for a spell. She only had two teeth, one on the right and one on the left. They both looked dirty. It looked like she was really old.

Hooks
We have been learning how to write interesting introductions in our recounts to 'hook' our readers.
Thump! Thump! We crept quietly and slowly towards the white door. We could hear the Primary girls class finishing their exam.
By Emaraina
I was patient and excited, waiting for the tournament to begin. It was finally Thursday, the day when the Middle Syndicate cricket teams were going to play.
By Nati
Splish, splash, kick, kick! It was last Wednesday in the middle block and the whole Middle Syndicate were at the Sunnybrae pool getting ready.

Holiday Poems
Mrs Olliver taught us how to write Diamante poems about our holidays. The poems below are from Max, Sophia and Zac L.
Swimsation
We have really enjoyed our swimming lessons with the Swimsation coaches. Read some of our Learning Log entries below.
I am learning to do arm circles but I am not making my arms straight enough. I am also trying not to put my feet down.
By Johan
I am very good at freestyle because my arms are flexible. Learning to swim is important because if you fall in the water you might sink if you can't swim.
By Amy
I am learning to float on by back and do backstroke.
By Zach M
My favourite thing about Swimsation lessons is the games because we get to play Noodle Tag.
